Sidney's father was Sidney Barker and his mother was Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ann Simms. His paternal grandparents were William Barker and Harriett Louesa Ellis; his maternal grandparents were David Simms and Mary Ann. He had a brother and two sisters, named Monty, Winifred and Louise. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Oliver and Ida.
