Dod's father was John (Charlie) Jeal and her mother was Charlotte Simons. Her paternal grandparents were James Jeal and Eliza Goodman; her maternal grandparents were James Simons and Amelia Thompson. She had four brothers and six sisters, named William, Roll, Arthur, Jack, M, Maud, Frances, Dolly, Loll and Tetsy. She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
