Francis' father was Henry Alfred Kemp and his mother was Eliza Jane Jeal. His maternal grandparents were William Walter Jeal and Sarah Morris. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Roland, Henry, Nellie, Fanny, Lucy, Annie and Elsie. He is the youngest of the eight children.
