Benjamin was born in 1821 in Steeple Bumpstead, Essex, England. Benjamin's father was James Barker and his mother was Areta Humphrey. His paternal grandparents were William Barker and Alice Ruse. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, Charles, Eliza, Lucinda and Alice. He was the third oldest of the six children.
