Eliza was born in 1816 in Steeple Bumpstead, Essex, England. Eliza's father was James Barker and her mother was Areta Humphrey. Her paternal grandparents were William Barker and Alice Ruse. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, James, Charles, Lucinda and Alice. She was the oldest of the six children.
