John's father was James Barker and his mother was Margaret Newton.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Barker and Mary Baker; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Newton and Margaret Patch. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Thomas, Thomas, Mary, Hannah, Ann and Anne.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
