Thomas' father was Thomas Ellis and his mother was Harriott Stubbings.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Ellis and Charlotte. He had a brother and six sisters, named Edward, Sarah, Charlotte, Harriett, Jane, Charlotte and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
