Ellen's father was John Pithes Steed and her mother was Charlotte Haward. Her paternal grandparents were Peter Steed and Elizabeth Pitches. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Howard, Laurence, Fanny, Lizzie, Amelia, Eliza, Letty, Louie and Sophy. She died at the age of 51 in 1911.
