John was born in 1856. John's father was Philip Barker and his mother was Mary Ann Bartlett. His paternal grandparents were John Barker and Ann Mizen. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Henry, Elizabeth, Martha, Sarah, Dudley, Maryjane, Ann, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
