John's father was Joseph Stone and his mother was Betty Reed.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Reed and Hannah. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Jonas, Samuel, Joseph, Ann, Mary and Jenny.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
